Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega and his comrade Rosario Murillo have expressed their strong rejection of terrorism and sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, a prominent Russian scientist and military leader.
In a message to Putin, Ortega condemned “the actions of terrorist fascism in the world,” emphasizing the responsibility of “Ukrainian terrorist fascism” in this criminal attack.
The event took place on December 17 in Moscow. The attack, attributed to the Ukrainian intelligence services, involved the detonation of a bomb hidden in a scooter as Kirillov left his residence.
This act has been described as one of the boldest since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the violence that has rocked the region.
Ortega joined in the pain of the affected families, stressing Nicaragua’s solidarity with the people and government of Russia: “We join in the pain and indignation of the people, the state, and the government of that brother country.”
In his message, Ortega also stressed that “fighting against fascism is fighting for peace, brotherhood, and solidarity,” emphasizing the need for a world where the rights of worthy and courageous peoples prevail.
Kirillov’s death has provoked a strong reaction in Russia, where he is considered a “hero,” and his murder has been described as a “terrorist attack” that will not go unanswered.
This event has not only shocked the Russian political class but also raises questions about future implications for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russian Vice President Dmitry Medvedev promised “certain punishment” to Ukraine for this act, suggesting an escalation of the conflict.
